Newport News Shipbuilding has hit a significant and new milestone in building a Virginia-class sub dubbed Arkansas (SSN 800).

The latter is now pressure hull complete, indicating that all hull sections have been blended to form one watertight unit.

NNS is one of the two shipyards capable of building and designing nuclear-powered subs. The advanced and unique capabilities of Virginia-class submarines increase firepower, stealth, and manoeuvrability.

Arkansas is the US Navy’s 27th fast-attack submarine belonging to the Virginia class. The sponsors of the shops are the six women associated with the historic group the Little Rock Nine. The latter is the first group of African American students who attended an all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, during the desegregation. The NNS honoured its nine members, including three men, during the 2022 keel authentication ceremony (held in November).
