The rescue mission has included five cargo vessels besides three Coast Guard vessels, the Air Force and Navy helicopters, and a navy frigate.
The Raptor, registered with the Comoros, carried 6,000 tons of salt from Alexandria, Egypt, to Istanbul, according to the coast guard. According to the Coast Guard, it had a crew of 14, comprising eight Egyptians, four Indians, and two Syrians.
Authorities claimed the ship reported a technical problem about 7 a.m. Sunday, it transmitted a distress signal and then vanished about 4 1/2 nautical miles southwest of Lesbos.
According to a coast guard spokeswoman, one Egyptian was rescued.
She said that eight shipping vessels, two helicopters, and a Greek navy frigate were hunting for survivors.
She noted that three Coast Guard ships had trouble reaching the location due to heavy seas. Because the case was continuing and she wasn’t permitted to speak to the media, the spokesperson said on the condition of anonymity.
The National Weather Service reported that the area witnessed north-westerly winds over 80 kph.
